Clinical Question:
Are beta-blockers^ particularly atenolol^ as effective as other antihypertensive medications in preventing important outcomes in hypertensive patients?

Bottom-line:
Atenolol is an inferior choice for blood pressure treatment. Beta-blockers in general should not be considered first- line in age ≥60^ and some have suggested they should not be first- line in any patient with uncomplicated hypertension.
